Monsoon Plant Care: Keep Your Garden Thriving Through the Rains

The monsoon is the easiest time of year to love your garden and the easiest time to accidentally kill it. Free water and soft light push plants into a growth spurt, but constant damp also invites root rot, fungus and a surprising number of pests. A few small habit changes will carry your plants happily through to October.
Water far less than you think
The single biggest monsoon mistake is watering on schedule instead of by need. Soil stays wet for days in humid weather, so always check first: push a finger two inches into the pot, and only water if it comes out dry.
- Move thirsty plants under cover if rain is relentless for days
- Empty saucers after every shower so roots never sit in water
- Skip misting entirely the air is already humid enough
Drainage is everything
Roots need air as much as water. Waterlogged soil suffocates them and that is what causes rot.
- Make sure every pot has an open drainage hole
- Add a layer of pebbles or broken terracotta at the base
- Lift pots onto small feet or bricks so water flows away freely

Watch for fungus and pests
Damp leaves and still air are a perfect home for fungal spots and mealybugs.
- Remove yellow or spotted leaves the moment you see them
- Thin out crowded foliage so air can move
- Wipe leaves dry after heavy rain, especially on indoor plants
If you spot white cottony patches or black mould, isolate the plant and treat it early a small problem now is an easy fix later.
Hold off on feeding
It feels counter-intuitive, but soggy soil cannot absorb fertiliser well, and excess nutrients encourage weak, leggy growth. Feed lightly, if at all, and resume your normal routine once the rain eases.
Plants that love the rain
Some plants positively thrive now ferns, peace lilies and calatheas all enjoy the humidity. Group your moisture-lovers together and let them have their best season.
A monsoon-ready garden mostly needs a lighter hand. Water less, drain well, watch closely and your plants will reward you with their lushest growth of the year.
